FRIDAY 25 JANUARY PREP YEAR 11C Refer to Extract 1 in the insert. Analyse the representation of Jamaican Reggae music and
musicians such as Bob Marley in this MOJO front cover. (5 marks)


At first look of the cover, you are able to see that Bob Marley has a very relaxed postured. This could be used in order to represent his music, reggae which is seen as a very chilled genre of music. He also has a smile and is looking directly at the reader. This is in order to create a connection between the audience and the star. He is also wearing casual clothes, this makes him appear as an equal to the reader. All these go against was the usual conventions of Mojo magazine do. It is usually a white male with a serious face, this could be used in order to give the readers a breath of fresh air.
In the centre of the page, "BOB MARLEY" can be read. "MARLEY" has been given two drop shadows behind, one yellow, the other is green. The main text is red, these three colours are the colours of the Jamaican flag. This shows reminiscence of where Bob Marley is from. The font used is an italic sans-serif, going along with the casual theme.

MOJO Another quick and easy revision prep, worth 5 marks. Base your analysis on MOJO's March 2019 issue. the exam question won't have the covermount (free CD) so don't refer to it.


The Mojo magazine features Joni Mitchell, a singer from the 1960s onwards. Who featured in a wide range of genres. At first looks of the cover, it is clear to see one of Mojo magazine's conventions, the star in front of the logo. This is to connote the fact that the magazine company are praising the star by saying that they are more important than their brand. This is one of the ways in which the star is glorified.


In the photo that they chose to use Joni Mitchell smiling, this is used to convey youth and happiness. Though she is 75, she is still young at heart. The smile may be also used as a way of reflection; as if she is smiling back on a successful music career. Joni is also looking directly at the reader, this establishes a relationship between the reader and the sta. When you look to the left you are able to see a title that says: "My gift was born of tragedy". This may suggest that there is something else hiding behind her smile, this is used to draw the reader in.

The Observer online newspaper uses a dark blue banner at the top of the page, this is here in order to connote a sense of formality and soberness. Telling the reader that the Observer takes the news very seriously and will tackle topics head-on, to bring you your daily news. As well as this the colour is also resembled with calmness, almost as if the newspaper is welcoming you, telling you to stay. Reminding you that you can see what is happening around the world from the comfort of your own home.


The main page of the website is well ordered, again telling the reader that the Observer takes the news very seriously. The page has a white background, this is used to show modernity and order. Like the blue banner, white is a very calming colour. This means the reader is not rushed into the page and able to explore it at their own speed. There is limited use of photographs allowing the page to not feel cluttered.

Messages and Values Q.9

1. The major use of newspapers is to offer a sense of knowing
what is going on in the world.The Observer knows that its readers are serious and interested in international affairs. This is evident in hard news articles about the state that the government is in, Brexit, Yellow Vests in Paris, Donald Trump.
2. The Observer meets its audience's need for a range of cultural, sporting and artistic news. It provides these with...The Brit awards.
3. The Observer does not shy away from 'difficult' issues that could make uncomfortable reading, such as...Brexit, the actions of the police in Paris.
4. The Observer has sections which are designed to appeal to
different types of readers.The Observer reflects the diversity of its readership in articles on...Schools and education would be aimed at teachers and parents, politicians for those concerned about the country's sate.
5. Newspaper readership can still be used as a symbol of one’s


social identity. The term ‘Guardian reader’ connotes a certain


type of social attitude and The Observer similarly reinforces


a set of social and political attitudes, and thus identity, in its


representations. For example, Observer readers like to think


of themselves as open-minded and this is reflected in the


Observer’s practice of allowing both sides of an argument


equally to be put when the newspaper is clearly on one side


of this argument. There is an example of this in....Dag Hammarskjold, showing opinions


5. The entertainment function of newspapers may take the


form of humour. It may take the form of diversion into


a celebrity world of ‘glamour’. It may take the form of human


interest stories in which readers are invited to sympathise with


the subjects of the article. Newspapers further offer games,


puzzles, crosswords and the like. At the higher end, sections


such as the New Review in the Observer may offer the pleasure

of extremely well-written think pieces and literature reviews. An example of this is... A recap of the Brit awards, this is a form of entertainment and glamour.
